The Community project Quality assurance in composites manufacturing is being funded as a major precursor to the EcoMat research and technology centre planned for Bremen which will specialise in lightweight construction. The implementation of this R&D project aims to boost Bremen as a base for technology, aerospace and automotive construction in order to enhance regional competitiveness.
The aircraft and vehicle industries are coming under increasing pressure from constantly rising fuel prices to reduce the weight of means of transport in order to stand up to global competition. This necessitates the increasing use of lightweight construction materials, and particularly of carbon-reinforced composites, in aircraft and vehicle manufacturing. This development is creating a need to come up with new technologies for quality assurance in the production of such components.
The project aims to tackle this challenge. The intention is to develop a quality-assured manufacturing chain which makes it possible to ensure 100% quality testing of composite components whilst keeping up with the pace of composites manufacturing. Also, the project is putting the conditions in place for the establishment of a non-destructive test laboratory which will be an integral part of the EcoMat.

The realisation of the EcoMat aims to strengthen the position of the state of Bremen as a leading centre of advanced lightweight construction and to promote the transfer of technology into various sectors.
The consortium which has formed for the co-operative R&D project is made up of SME component suppliers, scientific institutions and major end-users (the R&D triangle). The overarching project approach, which is particularly oriented towards Airbus and Premium Aerotec as pilot users, to strengthening Bremen’s aircraft component suppliers and to improving the general business environment in the area, means that the realisation of the project is of great significance for the region.
