In the Swiss district in Osterholz, the local tram system is to cease using the end-of-line tram loop. This area is located right in the centre of the district, and is to be used for measures to strengthen the district like services or a weekly market.
This creates the opportunity to make the area around the tram loop more attractive as well, for example by altering the traffic routes, with measures financed by both the private and the public sector.
The Senator for the Environment, Construction and Transport organised a total of three workshops in late 2011 and early 2012, which were used to collect ideas from the district advisory council, the town planners, the local landowners, local interest groups and individual citizens on how to design the square.
In order to flesh out these ideas, a dialogue-oriented expert planning procedure is now being undertaken with assistance from the ERDF. Three planning offices have been requested to submit proposals for a design and use concept. In order to attain a high level of acceptance in the population, the public is to be very much involved in the process.
