Ecological development of the Weser beach riverbank

weserbeach

Compared to Bremen, Bremerhaven has far fewer stretches of riverbank which are suited to development under the Lebensader Weser (Weser lifeline) programme. The riverbank at the Weser beach in Bremerhaven does however meet the requirements of the programme, and the aim is now to return the riverbank and the flooding areas to their natural state, to open them carefully up to leisure use, and to manage the river area in a sustainable manner.

As part of the project entitled Ecological development of the Weser beach riverbank, an area of approx. 1000 m² with the only fairly natural riverbank section in Bremerhaven’s inner city area will be ecologically enhanced via dune-like rises and the planting of dune vegetation. This will make it possible for residents and visitors to experience the potential of nature by the Weser. Natural landscape structures will be added to the dyke, which was recently raised, and this will help to improve the area and the landscape.
