The central area of Geestemünde suffers from a high volume of traffic, an increasing number of cheap outlets, and ugly shop fronts and shop window displays. As a result, there is a lot of vacant property along the streets. Some buildings are in danger of becoming dilapidated. Furthermore, Geestemünde has virtually no cultural or leisure services. These problems make Geestemünde a less attractive place to live.
A neighbourhood management office has been set up in the centre of Geestemünde with a view to positively influencing the development of the area. This programme is to run for four years until the end of 2014. The office is intended to co-ordinate the efforts to improve the area.
The neighbourhood management project in Geestemünde aims to enhance the competitiveness of the central area by developing a balanced provision of services in the field of local retailing, culture, catering, quality of life and housing. The various measures are intended to boost customer loyalty to the area. The residential area of Geestemünde is to be strengthened by the existence of an attractive and lively central area.
