Following on from their recognition as a city of science in 2005, Bremen and Bremerhaven have been participating since 2007 in the Year of Sciences set up by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research, a campaign which focuses each year on a specific scientific discipline.
These thematic years make it possible to hold a broad variety of events aimed at target groups both within and outside the regional innovation networks, at the regional public and at targeted supraregional tourist groups. 2007 was the Year of Humanities, and 2008 is the Year of Mathematics. Bremen is presenting itself as a knowledge-based city which is finding new ways to promote awareness of and understanding for science and research, and is thus attractive for companies and employees in the spheres of high technology and research.
