The former Bremerhaven Maritime Board of Inquiry can be found in a central location in the entrance area of the Havenwelten tourism facility, next to the German Emigration Centre and the Klimahaus 8° Ost. The former Maritime Board of Inquiry is one of the few historic buildings which still recall the city’s history as a port of emigration, and is a valuable building in both architectural and historic terms.
At present, the former Maritime Board of Inquiry is host to various bodies, including the research division of the German Emigration Centre and the headquarters of the German Emigration Centre Foundation. Long-term planning involves the development of the Maritime Board of Inquiry into the Centre for Migration Research. This would make it possible to focus on additional aspects of the City of Bremerhaven’s emigration history: local day-to-day life and people working in occupations (like captain, pilot, harbour master, sailor) which played major roles in the emigration story, and all of who would meet in the old port building, the old Maritime Board of Inquiry.
Thanks to its location, the former Maritime Board of Inquiry links the Havenwelten area with the neighbouring city districts. The renovation of the former Maritime Board of Inquiry will not only preserve the historic facade, but will make the entire area more attractive. The ERDF support will thus firstly enhance the spatial interrelationships, and secondly form the foundation stone for the future improvements in the cultural and scientific services in this area of high potential.
